How to remove silence and long pauses

Long gaps make a talk, a lesson or a podcast drag. Tailwave can shorten every pause in one step, and keep a natural breath between sentences.

Shorten every pause

  1. Open the editor and drop your recording onto the page.
  2. Select the part to tighten, or everything with Ctrl+A.
  3. Choose Effect › Truncate silence… and set:
    • Quieter than: what counts as silence. −50 dB suits a quiet room; try −40 dB for a noisier one.
    • Pauses longer than: leave shorter gaps alone, for example 0.5 s.
    • Shorten them to: the pause that remains, for example 0.3 s.
  4. Apply and listen. The audio after each pause moves up. If it sounds rushed, undo with Ctrl+Z and keep longer pauses.
  5. Export with Export.

Just see where the silences are

Analyze › Find silence… puts a label on every quiet stretch without changing the audio. Click a label to jump there and decide case by case. With labels in place you can also export one file per label, for example to split a recording into separate tracks.

Tip: remove background noise first (see the noise guide): with a quieter floor, the pauses are easier to tell apart.
