How to convert WAV to MP3
WAV files are large; an MP3 of the same audio is about a tenth of the size and plays anywhere. Tailwave converts in your browser, so even long recordings never leave your computer.
Convert in four steps
- Open the editor and drop your WAV file onto the page (or several files at once).
- Press at the top right, or choose .
- Choose and a quality. is the highest; (about 190 kbps) makes smaller files that sound the same to most ears.
- Press . The MP3 downloads with the name you gave it.
Other formats
The same dialog writes:
- FLAC: lossless and about half the size of WAV. Best for archiving.
- Ogg Vorbis and Opus: small files with good quality; Opus is excellent for speech at 64 kbps.
- M4A (AAC): plays well on Apple devices.
- WAV at 16-bit (CD), 24-bit or 32-bit float, to go the other way: MP3 to WAV.
You can also set the sample rate, mono or stereo, the tags (title, artist, album, year), and a loudness target such as −14 LUFS for music streaming or −16 LUFS for podcasts.
Convert several files at once
Drop all of them in: each becomes its own track. In the export dialog choose , and you get one MP3 per file.
No upload, no size limit from a server. The conversion runs on your computer with the encoders built into Tailwave.
